Arcade houses designated as a UNESCO Bauhaus World Heritage Site

Initial coordination, analysis and consideration processes begin

Modernisation work will take place from the 3rd quarter of 2021 until the 3rd quarter of 2022. The stae of Saxony-Anhalt is providing funding of 1.55 million euros.

“Living in a historic building” – since 2017, the arcade houses have formed part of the UNESCO Bauhaus World Heritage Site. The utilisation concept emphasised by UNESCO has a unique selling point, as it has existed in this form since 1929. The modernisation of Peterholzstrasse 48 is intended to create a link between a historic building with cultural aspirations and lively, future-proof dwelling.

The following extensive modernisation measures are being implemented at Peterholzstrasse 48:

  • Improvement of accessibility through:
    • Installation of a lift that stops on all floors, including the basement
    • Construction of a ramp at the rear of the house to facilitate access to the house and garden
    • Installation of a shower with floor-level access in all flats

  • Replacement of the central heating systems with modern, more efficient heating systems

  • Conversion of the central drinking water pipes to a decentralised system

  • Increase in the electrical rating, allowing more electrical end devices to be used

  • Insulation of the inner walls

  • Removal of the plastic apartment windows and installation of more thermally efficient wooden windows based on the historic plans

  • Installation of external sun protection on the south-facing windows of the apartments to reduce the heat creation in summer

The apartments have been undergoing ongoing renovation work since November 2021. So far, we have insulated the interior walls of the building, renovated the bathrooms (including installing showers with floor-level access), replaced the windows based on the historic plans and installed external sun protection on the apartment windows. Decentralised drinking water pipes were also installed in the course of this work.
