Lift for the arcade house

Peterholzstrasse 48 has been undergoing modernisation works since July 2021. The aim was to create a link between a historic building with cultural aspirations and a lively, future-proof dwelling. To do so, we had to overcome a number of challenges.

Lights and music in the arcades

The Wohnungsgenossenschaft Dessau eG housing co-operative hosted an atmospheric concert on 21 September 2019 at the Peterholzstraße 40 arcade house. The concert was held to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Bauhaus buildings. Construction began on the arcade houses in 1929, and since 2017 they have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The event was also intended as a thank you to the members of the cooperative who, as residents of the houses, not only tolerate the significant increase in visitor interest, but always meet visitors with a smile, answer their questions and even open their own doors to the most curious. The two-part evening was presented by the duo Stock/Wettin with “bauhaus polyphon” and Dessau singer Heike Huth with excerpts from her programme “Walter Gropius meets Marlene Dietrich”.

Peterholzstraße banner

In the arcade houses in the south of Dessau, there is still great delight: the Bauhaus buildings were declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO just a fortnight ago.

Since Thursday, a huge banner in Peterholzstraße has also been drawing attention to this. It also mentions the www.laubenganghaeuser.de, website, where residents tell stories about living in the World Heritage Site.

Research project reconstructs the original state of the arcade houses designed by Hannes Meyer, Bauhaus director from 1928 to 1930

The project is intended not only to reveal the design process behind the arcade houses and provide new insights into Bauhaus pedagogy, but also to reconstruct the original state of the buildings as far as possible. The research project is headed by Philipp Oswalt, Professor of Architectural Theory and Design at the University of Kassel and Director of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation from 2009 to 2014.
