are our arcade houses in the south of the future Bauhausstadt of Dessau.
With pride, passion and the necessary sensitivity, we manage the 5 listed arcade houses in Mittelbreite and Peterholzstrasse.
The houses have been owned cooperatively for almost 90 years. With socially acceptable rents, the philosophy of “people's needs instead of luxury needs” that was introduced under Hannes Meyer in 1928 still applies today. The distinctive architecture of the houses characterizes the Törten district and attracts countless tourists to the south of the city.
The residential buildings are listed buildings and have been nominated together with the “Federal School of the ADGB” for the expansion of the UNESCO World Heritage site “The Bauhaus and its sites in Weimar and Dessau”. The 90 apartments provide a home for a total of around 100 people.
At this point we would like to thank our photo models – our members and tenants of the arcade houses.
The roots of our cooperative go back to the year 1900. Following this tradition, we are shaping the future together with all organs of the cooperative.
The members of the “Wohnungsgenossenschaft Dessau” are at the center of our actions.

On April 8, 1954, the "Workers' Housing Cooperative Waggonbau Dessau" was founded. After 11 years, on November 1, 1965, several cooperatives merged to form the AWG unit. In 1979 the GWG was connected to the AWG unit. After the political change, the AWG changed its name to the Dessau housing cooperative. It was and is a success story.
But it wasn't just since 1954 that our cooperative has enriched life in Dessau. The Dessauer Spar- und Baugenossenschaft e.V. was founded in 1900. G. mbH, whose legal successor we are. Since then we have shaped the cityscape. The first apartments were built near the water tower on Friedhofstrasse, Daheimstrasse and Melanchthonstrasse.
The arcade houses were a revolution in construction at the time. The Dessauer savings and building cooperative e. G. mbH was the client and builder of the five arcade houses in the south of Dessau, which were built by the Bauhaus construction department under director Hannes Meyer in 1930.

The Swiss architect, lateral thinker, teacher and urbanist Hannes Meyer would have been 125 years old on November 18, 2014.
Our relationship with the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation is characterized by intensive collaboration. Under the critical eye of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation, the striking residential buildings were modernized in 1996/1997 in accordance with monument law aspects.
Since 2003, we have been creating new construction projects with rental apartments that are worth seeing and have therefore developed into a decisive urban designer. In addition, we shape the cityscape with our extensive modernization projects.
